Jonathan I. Epstein, MD is Professor of Pathology, Urology, and Oncology, the recipient of the Reinhard Chair of Urological Pathology, and Director of Surgical Pathology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Dr. Epstein is on nine editorial boards in the fields of Pathology, Urology, Oncology, and Medicine. He obtained a combined BA-MD degree from Boston University’s 6-year Medical Program in 1981; he did his AP residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and his fellowship in Oncological Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Following, he joined the staff at Hopkins and has been there his entire career.


He has been invited outside of his institution for 273 lectures, including 36 different countries. Dr. Epstein has 646 publications in peer-reviewed literature and has authored 47 book chapters. More recently, he was the organizer and leader of a consensus conference that updated the Gleason Grading System published in 2005. He is the author/co-author of 5 books and the series editor of the Biopsy Interpretation Series. He is one of 4 editors of the WHO Pathology & Genetics of the Urinary System and Male Genital Tract (2004) and recently published with Drs. Humphrey and Cubilla the AFIP Atlas of Tumor Pathology: Tumors of the Prostate Gland, Seminal Vesicles, Male Urethra, and Penis. 4th Series (2011).


Dr. Epstein is the past President of the International Society of Urological Pathology and has been active in the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology including serving on the Education Committee, Council, and currently the Chair of the Development Committee.


He also has one of the largest surgical pathology consult services in the world with approximately 16,000 cases per year covering the full range of urological pathology, which he has used to train his 42 genitourinary pathology fellows to date.


During Dr. Epstein’s lecture he will discuss the diagnosis of limited adenocarcinoma on needle core biopsies and its common mimickers.
